Senate Confirms Perez to Lead Labor Department PDF Print E-mail
Articles | Politics

The chamber ended debate on the nomination yesterday afternoon when Republican Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker of Tennessee, Susan Collins of Maine, Mark Kirk of Illinois, John McCain of Arizona and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska crossed the aisle to give Democrats the minimum votes necessary to proceed to a vote. Today, however, all six opposed the nominee.

President Barack Obama nominated Perez on March 18. The president made the announcement from the East Room at the White House in ceremony attended by, among others, Attorney General Eric Holder and Martin O’Malley, the governor of Maryland. Perez served as Maryland’s labor secretary before being confirmed to his Justice Department position in October 2009.

Perez will become the only Latino in the president’s Cabinet. He succeeds Hilda Solis as head of the Labor Department.
