Team Obama to press: We're going to win

President Obama’s top aides told reporters in no uncertain terms that they are winning the campaign and are tied or ahead in all the swing states.

"I don’t want to be ambiguous about this at all, We're winning this race,” senior adviser David Axelrod said on a conference call Monday morning. “I say that not on the basis of some mystical faith in a wave that’s going to come or some hidden vote. We base it on cold, hard data based on who has voted so far and on state by state polling. So we just, you’re going to get spun and spun and spun in the next week and what I would urge you to do is to focus on the facts, focus on the data, focus on the trends in the states and if you do it will lead you to the same conclusions.”

Both Axelrod and the campaign’s manager, Jim Messina, taunted GOP rival Mitt Romney’s team with suggestions that Republicans are “bluffing” when they claim momentum. Forays by Romney and his allies into television ads in Minnesota and Pennsylvania are merely distractions, they said.

“If the Romney campaign put as much effort into its ground game as it did in trying to twist the truth, maybe they’d be better in shape than they are in eight days out,” Messina said. “The Romney campaign wants you to think that it’s expanding the map but it’s not.”

Messina dismissed word of the pro-Romney super PAC Restore our Future going up with a $2.1 million Pennsylvania ad buy as desperation. Yet he said Obama’s campaign will respond and buy TV time in the storm-socked state as well.
