Designer for the Stars.

If you’ve ever admired the sophisticated styles of Singers Josephine Baker, Sarah Vaughn, Joyce Bryant, Dorothy Dandridge, Marian Anderson and Ella Fitzgerald, chances are they may have been sporting a Zelda Wynn Valdes creation. Valdes was one of the top fashion stylists back in the day for some of the world’s most well known stars. Her work contained a glamorous feminine-style such as the hip-hugging sexy gowns worn by celebrities like Gladys Knight and Jessye Norman. The designer created dresses to accent the female’s body structure. Some of her gowns represented a mermaid form, the dress would start off tight and fitted at the top and along the hips, and contain a dramatic flare and ruffles at the very bottom.

Valdes’ style was admired by the American magazine publisher and founder of Playboy Enterprises, Hugh Hefner. Because of this the fashion designer was selected to produce the very first playboy costume in the 1950s.
